Is Energy Management the Key to Enhanced Health?
How I used Human Design to go from feeling like a sack of garbage to experiencing a sense of wellness, vitality, and even bliss
Reflecting back on my Human Design journey so far, the most incredible, tangible result I can point to in my own life is the enhanced health I have experienced since beginning my experiment.
Growing up in a family of three children, I was typically the child who got sick the most (I am a Projector Energy Type). My brother and sister (who are a Generator and Manifesting Generator, respectfully), seemed to bypass many of the flus I was struck by in my younger years. I remember I got sick most often when there was a pause in the action - a break from school, for example - when all of the “doing” seemed to finally catch up with me.
This trend continued into my adult years. I would frequently come down with “flus” that often did not have any other symptoms besides deep, deep exhaustion. When winter or summer break came around after exam season at University, it was almost a guarantee that I would fall ill. It seemed as though I could push and push myself to a certain extent, but the energetic debt always needed to be paid.
As a competitive endurance athlete in my 20s, it was the same story. I fell ill much more frequently than any of my team mates or almost anyone I knew, despite being “healthy” on all measures I could perceive (I ate well, I obviously exercised a lot, I took rest days, my blood work was fine, etc.).
Honestly, I didn’t think much of this trend at any of those points in time. Illnesses happen, and it’s just something I accepted and did my best to work around.
It wasn’t until I discovered Human Design and learned I am a Projector that lightbulbs began to go off in my brain. It wasn’t until I actively began my Human Design experiment (immediately after I saw my chart - I couldn’t un-see the truth in it!) that I began to feel into my body for the first time in many, many years. It wasn’t until that moment that I felt the screams of my body, and knew I needed to do something about it.
I remember the early days of my Human Design experiment, right after I had decided to stop training and competing in elite endurance sport. I was re-discovering how to move my body again in a way that actually felt good; In alignment with my Inner Authority rather than following an externally-imposed training plan. I remember being astonished at how good I felt when I started to do that! I felt a vitality and vibrancy within the cells of my body that I’d long-since forgotten.
When I was training as a competitive endurance athlete, the “not-self” voices of my undefined Sacral and Heart centres were in the driver’s seat of my life. Those voices/energies were constantly telling me I needed to do more (undefined Sacral) to prove I am worthy (undefined Heart). Those voices drowned out my Inner Authority, bringing me off-centre and completely out of alignment. When I began the slow and sometimes painful process of firing those voices from their established positions as the bosses of my life, I began to find centre again. My body, mind, and spirit started to feel good… like, really good! I remember in those early day of my Human Design experiment, doing yoga, going on easy bike rides and runs, doing pilates… and just feeling such a sense of overall well-being and bliss. This was a world of difference from the intense running and skiing training that had been my norm before discovering Human Design, which left me feeling totally depleted and honestly like a sack of garbage most days.
This “blissed-out-wellness-feeling” was absolutely novel to me at the time. Now, six years later, it is my norm. I can’t imagine any other way of being. I honestly shudder to remember how I was feeling on a daily basis when I was training and competing in endurance sport. There were certainly a lot of endorphins and a lot of ego highs that came from what I was achieving, but the deep sense of peace and wellness I now feel in my body daily was almost completely absent. Also, I went from getting multiple colds and flus every year (sometimes up to 8-10 per year!), to going years without any type of illness. In the last six years since I began my experiment, I had one flu back in 2022, and one cold in 2023. If that isn’t a tangible result of living my Human Design experiment, I don’t know what is!

Energy management is something that is completely unique to you as an individual. It depends on your unique chart configuration, including your Energy Type, Strategy, Inner Authority, defined and undefined Motor Centres, and whether you have an active or passive body. Understanding these basic things about yourself can make a world of difference in terms of managing your energy for increased vitality, health, and well-being in every sense of the word. Chances are you have a different chart than I do, and so your unique recipe for finding health and balance in your movement practice and beyond could look quite different from my unique recipe.
